Description

The choice of capacitor values and quantities for complex PDNs require most engineers to turn to simulation software.  The desired impedance targets are often not met due to the space limitations of the capacitors that would be required.  A MATLAB based optimization tool is presented that can analyze a complex PDN using either traditional frequency-domain target impedance curves or a unique worst-case time-domain approach.  The tool can use s-parameter models of a PCB, chip-package, lumped on-die capacitor networks, and candidate capacitor models.  The output is a set of optimized capacitors that can be applied to a design.
